Finally you are FREE. It hurts so much, but when we stay, we physically, spiritually and emotionally die; it's just a matter of time. And as I am constantly reminded, "Freedom isn't Free." Good for you - you found the strength to leave and you SURVIVED.
It takes a brave soul to finally pack up and go, and another huge leap to "tell the tale." You did a good job despite the odds being stacked against you from the very beginning, when you were young and innocent and free, even if you didn’t know it at the time. He came to you the way he was, and NOTHING you did was going to change that, ever. The only thing that would "change" was you, and change you did. And not for the better until you were gone. You survived and you SAVED YOUR SELF. What better "Badge of Honor" can there be?
I hope you can enjoy the rest of your life now, and much earlier than I am learning to do.
I was raised to believe that "love could overcome all," but I have seen - painfully - this just isn't true. Nurture does NOT always overcome nature or genetics, a good part of the time. But we cast ourselves on the altar of Desire and the winds of Change, and we find our way home, and *somehow* we survive.
“The winds of grace blow all the time; all we need do is set our sails.”

The times I’ve been my thinnest are the times I’ve been the most unhappy. And the times I’ve gotten the most praise. I think about that a lot.
