The sobriety and love section is the one that gets me. The idea that alcohol wasn't just social lubricant: it was plausible deniability. It lets you not-know things you were already knowing. Sober, the ambiguity collapses. Someone touches your arm... And you can't file it under chemistry anymore. You have to decide what to do with the information. That's not just scarier. It's a completely different kind of accountability.

Before, alcohol did the heavy lifting. Chemistry was reduced to chemistry. Space became atmosphere. Someone would touch your arm and the room would soften and it felt like it meant something. "
